The traditions of bikers and their tattoos seems to have started some time around the 50's when motorcycle gangs such as the Hell's Angels formed around the country. The bikers would get tattoos which would show their membership or indicate the colors and symbols of their motorcycle club. Some would even have tattoos depicting their pride, beliefs, and their rank within the organization. These bikers made up only about one percent of total motorcycle owners.
Some bikers consider their bodies to be blank canvases and their tattoos to be works of art. These bikers also consider their bikes to be artistic expressions. For others, it is just a way to express their own individuality.
There are many popular tattoos which are used within the biker community. One of the most preferred would be the skull. That is probably because there are so many variations which can be applied to the symbol. Another favorite would be the eagle since it represents freedom. For bikers, being free is how they feel when they are on their bikes. Harley-Davidson has many tattoos which picture their logo and cycles in one way or another. These are also very popular along with the "Live To Ride" phrase.
Among the other tattoos you might find are daggers, knives, spiders, mythical creatures, Norse Gods, and snakes. Pin ups are also found to be used on the biceps. Some of the women who ride bikes also have tattoos. The preferred tattoos for women are butterflies, hearts and roses.
