In 2007 Harley-Davidson has contracted with Lehman Trikes U.S.A. to produce their new three wheeled motorcycles (trikes). The twist is that they would have two front wheels instead of the classic look of two rear wheels. The production for the new patent design have not been disclosed yet. Currently available Harley the two rear wheel and one front wheel models like the Tri Glide, which kept the physique and characteristics the Ultra Classic Electra Glide Touring models with a Tour-Pak luggage compartment, is priced around $29k.
Automakers with all terrain vehicles like Honda and Toyota were cautious to join this three wheel motorcycle market due to the three wheel ATV controversy involving the unstable design but have their own models in the market already. Some automakers like Daimler-Chrysler and Piaggio have embraced the market with their own prototypes of the three wheel phenomena. A majority of the popular brands are co-developed with Lehman Trikes.
The target market for these trikes are those who are novice riders, those who want to have more control, possibly the disabled, and those who may just like to have balance and stability. The trikes also offer better cornering and handling, especially if they have technology like the Vertical Stabilizer that are in Harley-Davidson Daytona Trike model. Each trike has its own specs and are comparable, if not better than, to its two wheeled predecessors. Depending on where you live, such as California, you may not need a special license to drive this three wheeled vehicle.
