Bikers and Tattoos

Bikers and tattoos just seem to be made for each other. There is an entire subculture of bikers in our society, whether they are weekend bikers or maintain a biker lifestyle all week long. One of the rites of passage for a true biker enthusiast is to get at least one biker tattoo.

Originally, bikers and tattoos both carried a bad connotation. Bikers were associated with bad motorcycle gangs, a rough lifestyle, and a common disregard for the law. However, only about one percent of bikers today actually belong to some kind of a biker gang. The vast majority of men and women who make up the biker culture are normal people, working normal jobs during the week, and addicted to the open road on the weekends. Tattoos used to be a designation of either prison time or a biker gang. Again, as tattoos have moved into the mainstream of society, they have turned into a form of body art and self expression.

Biker tattoos are generally motorcycle brand specific. Most bikers are loyal to their brand of bikes, especially Harley Davidson. People who love their bikes feel a sense of pride and are willing to permanently display their brand of bike on their bodies. The size of the tattoo can also vary, but as a general rule, bigger is better when it comes to biker tattoos. Weekend bikers may sport only one or two tattoos, but hardcore bikers can cover the majority of their upper bodies with biker related tattoos. Biker tattoos are for the truly devoted bikers. In general, the more biker tattoos, the more committed they are to the biker lifestyle.
